Legacy...

Transcendence as well as legacy, is often understood as something that we may not necessarily experience, but our children or even our grandchildren will. And in a world where instant gratification is promoted, this can be difficult to grasp.

Today I will focus on something more abstract, which is to share my experiences in leadership, purpose, conscious capitalism, talent, innovation, operational excellence, crisis management, and many other interesting topics. In that sense, when we talk about legacy, what usually comes to mind is the image of an older person in the last years of their life, someone who, having lived and experienced many years, wants to leave something of value to future generations. They want to leave their mark on the world. There's nothing wrong with this, in fact, many cultures greatly value the wisdom that often comes with age. However, we should ask ourselves why wait for those last years to talk about legacy?

I believe there is a misconception and a missed opportunity to tap into the great talent and enormous energy of the younger generations. I have always emphasized the importance of balancing experience and youth if we want our organizations to stand out and thrive, or even just to survive. The same applies to society. Imagine, in that sense, a young person in their early adulthood, who knows that they must leave a positive mark on the world, a young person who understands that legacy is something that is built, something that transcends our own mortality.

This concept, which is very poetic, also requires a very complex exercise of humility and detachment. Transcendence as well as legacy, is often understood as something that we may not necessarily experience, but our children or even our grandchildren will. And in a world where instant gratification is promoted, this can be difficult to grasp.

Working for something I will not enjoy? Devoting time and effort for people who are not yet born? It sounds very distant from the effort/benefit concept that currently predominates. However, it is necessary, now more than ever, to develop the concept of transcendence regardless of country, age, or our own interests.

We are at an extremely delicate and crucial moment for the survival of our species. Much of what we must do now, as for example, to reduce the impact of global warming, involves significant reduction of our consumption of highly polluting materials and resources. In the case of CEOs and executives in general, we could, for example, consider reducing business travel or investing decisively in sustainability, even if it affects the economic profitability of our organizations.

As citizens, this could mean, for example, reducing our water consumption, reducing our electricity consumption, leaving our cars in the garage and walking, etc. All of these issues are related to comfort, lack of concern, or even selfishness, knowing that at least our generation will not suffer the worst consequences of not doing so... A dangerous thought that quickly spreads is, why should future generations think about the future of humanity when we do not?

Giving up these comforts now so that future human beings who inhabit the earth have to struggle or suffer less is part of teaching our youth about the importance of transcending individualism and embracing a global purpose. It's about understanding purpose as something bigger and more important than oneself.

And for that, those of us who are already part of the old guard must set an example.

Peru is an opportunity, despite the social, political, and economic crisis it is going through. It is an opportunity to let go of the security of what we known, to understand, to build bridges of dialogue, and to recognize how much we have all been mistaken. At some point, we will have to clench our teeth and work together for the future of all, even if it means leaving the security of a stable job and the fact that we have not lacked anything (unlike millions of Peruvians).

I've been thinking about this for several months, and I've made a decision. With the energy I still have, I will get fully involved to contribute to the state in any way possible: management, innovation, development, etc. With my current experience at AMSAC, I know it is not an easy task and is full of challenges that sometimes seem insurmountable, but I must, out of love for Peru, set an example and show the new generations that it is worth working hard now for those who come after us.
