Orica and Exsa: Taking innovation to new heights

Exsa's culture of innovation is a true gold mine that, I am sure, Orica will know how to take to new heights…

I am glad that the Australian company Orica, the world leader in blasting products and services, has acquired Exsa, the leading company in this area in Peru, because this way the legacy of the latter will have continuity and significance over time and, in addition The australian company will know how to maximize its potential, perhaps more than any other.

Reading the interview conducted by the El Comercio newspaper to Alberto Calderón, CEO of Orica, I found the analogy he made about Exsa very didactic, indicating that it is “like a Ferrari”, but driven like a Holden (an emblematic automotive company in Australia, manufacturer of mid-range vehicles, and today in serious trouble). This comparison has several interesting edges, but the most important, without a doubt, is that the reason why Exsa is comparable to a high-performance car, is for its investment in innovation and technology.

However, there is also another equally important reason for this analogy about the company: the application of what is known as conscious capitalism, which, although it is  gaining more weight nowadays, it has been developing consistenly at Exsa for many years. by all its managers. Therefore, it is important to highlight the focus on the client (both external and internal), the emotional well-being of its staff, the concepts of security to protect it and also the company's assets, support for the surrounding communities (which knows the history of Exsa, knows that the towns of Lurín and Pachacamac have grown and flourished with their support), awareness of the environment by implementing the most demanding measures when even the PAMA for industries was not yet mandatory, etc. The Peruvian company leader in blasting products and services, in short, was ahead of its time.

Returning to innovation and technology, the lead-free non-electric detonator, referred by Mr. Calderón, is an example of Exsa's vision of the future, since its use is much more advisable from the environmental point of view, in a A context in which all efforts are focused on developing more sustainable businesses for the benefit of all the publics of interest around them.

It is comforting that Orica is going to use this disruptive development and expand it to its fullest. Furthermore, the CEO of Orica could also have mentioned other innovations that Exsa managed to develop over time and that, I am sure, will benefit Orica, such as the safest and cheapest dynamite in the world for its very low nitroglycerin content, the detonation trap in emulsion production plants to prevent the spread of accidents, the use of fertilizer in dynamites and emulsions since 2002, the Quantex (disruptive technology for open-pit blasting, with lower cost, higher energy and lower carbon footprint ), the Quantex Sub (the version of this latest technology, but for underground mining), etc. And in portfolio was, at least when I had the honor of leading the company, the printed delay for non-electric detonators, the explosive phase of said non-electric detonators using Combocap® technology making them transportable without any safety restriction, the emulsion in base to two inert phases, etc.

Exsa's culture of innovation is a true gold mine that, I am sure, Orica will know how to take to new heights…
