The common denominator in all the cases described above, is the decision to bet decisively on innovation as a driving force for development.
A few days ago I read an interesting column by Daniel Contesse, who made a parallel between the impressive ecosystem of technological entrepreneurship in Israel compared to the Chilean reality.
Contesse identified 4 fundamental aspects that allowed a nation with only 8 million inhabitants, with known problems for the entire international community and scarce 70 years of existence, to stand out in the development of innovative solutions (among others, such as Waze) that today triumph worldwide.
The first aspect identified was the global approach of Israeli entrepreneurship. Being a small country, they understand that progress is their integration with the global market, and that's what their solutions point to. Scientists and entrepreneurs work with their eyes set on a global scenario.
The second factor identified by Contesse is an articulated work between universities and companies, in the full understanding of the importance of a science capable of offering concrete solutions to the problems of industry and society.
As a third point we have the interdisciplinarity. The complexity of current problems implies an interdisciplinary approach, something that in Israel is actively promoted at all levels. Only in this way it is possible to generate integral and efficient solutions.
Finally, Contesse considers the fact that the issue of intellectual property is completely solved in Israel it is an important impulse for innovation, since it is already part of the scientific and technological science of the country, structured everything in a way that facilitates the transfer of knowledge from the university centers to the productive world.
To these 4 pillars I would add one more: that the state, the private company and the universities work closely together within a triumvirate, to reach the objectives in pursuit of innovative solutions.
Is it impossible to achieve? No way. All comes from the decision to promote innovation through concrete and coordinated actions that allow you to generate a virtuous circle. The examples are there to be applied.
Chile is another clear example, but this time in our region, becoming the second country in the world where most startups accelerate, only below the United States, and above the United Kingdom and Israel. This is the result of an articulated work between the three actors mentioned above (state, private company and universities), with a clear focus on the development of innovative solutions.
Singapore is another evidence of what can be achieved when innovation becomes a national objective. Although it is really a country, it is considered as the "city of the future" by different publications. Its development was driven by its first National Technological Plan approved in 1991 and since then it has invested the equivalent of 30 billion dollars in scientific research.
This plan included, among other things, the creation of the Agency for Technology, Science and Research and the very active promotion of technological training from an early age. It is not about spending but about investment focused on development.
The common denominator in all the cases described above, is the decision to bet decisively on innovation as a driving force for development. We are still far from that reality in Peru, and that is extremely worrying in a world in which innovation has stopped being a luxury to become a necessity. Warned we are!
