We were not born leaders, but we forged ourselves and became that with a lot of effort, constant learning and a strong personal discipline.
A little over a month ago, I was lucky to participate in the Alumni Summit 2018 at the Harvard Business School, and a constant that I could appreciate in all the conferences, was that we were not born leaders, but we forged ourselves and became that with a lot of effort, constant learning and a strong personal discipline. As with the daily workout in the gym or at home, be it to lose weight or simply to improve the muscles. It is a permanent process, because if we stop it, we will lose the advance gained, returning to a flaccid musculature or again gaining weight.
One might wonder, then, what characterizes a good leader? Believe it or not, it is something that many of us already do in our day to day, perhaps even unconsciously.
First, appropriate, take responsibility unconditionally and have passion for your task or responsibility.
Second, knowing how to confront ideas in a constructive way.
Third, coaching people in their environment and empower them.
Fourth, knowing how to communicate or actively and openly share ideas, expectations, concerns, initiatives, etc.
Fifth, surround yourself with the best possible people, being even better than the leader himself, and complement with a team related to your ideas.
Sixth, know how to prioritize.
Seventh, before blaming others, have the honesty to accept your own faults and deficiencies, working on correcting them.
We can all be leaders. Work hard on it, as if you were doing your daily workout.
